Before 1864 this stretch of the Waikato River was Kirikiriroa, a Māori village of gardens on the riverbank. After the Waikato War the land was confiscated and soldier-settlers of the 4th Waikato Militia laid out a town on both banks. It was named after Captain John Hamilton, a naval officer killed at Gate Pā that year. This walk follows the main street to the river and the museum, then crosses to the old military settlement and comes back by the lake; about two and a half hours.

Hamilton NZ

A short history of Hamilton NZ

Where the city stands today, on the Waikato River, there was a fortified Māori village called Kirikiriroa. After the Waikato War a military settlement was established here in 1864 and named after Captain John Hamilton, who was killed that same year at the Battle of Gate Pā. The town grew as the farming centre of a rich dairy region, became a city in 1945, and in 1964 the University of Waikato opened here. Today about 180,000 people live here, and it is the largest city in New Zealand that is not on the coast.

From Kirikiriroa to Hamilton

Before 1864 this stretch of the Waikato River was Kirikiriroa, a Māori village of gardens on the riverbank. After the Waikato War the land was confiscated and soldier-settlers of the 4th Waikato Militia laid out a town on both banks. It was named after Captain John Hamilton, a naval officer killed at Gate Pā that year. This walk follows the main street to the river and the museum, then crosses to the old military settlement and comes back by the lake; about two and a half hours.

  1. Garden Place · The square was once a hill in the middle of town. It was cut away in the late 1930s to make flat ground for a car park, and later became the paved civic square it is today.
  2. Riff Raff Statue · Richard O'Brien, who wrote 'The Rocky Horror Show', grew up in the Waikato and worked as a hairdresser on this spot, then the site of the Embassy cinema. The city put up the bronze of his character Riff Raff in 2004.
  3. Victoria on the River · From these terraces you look down on the Waikato, at about 425 km the longest river in New Zealand. It was the main highway of the region long before roads, carrying canoes and later river steamers.
  4. Waikato Museum · The museum was built around Te Winika, a waka taua or war canoe carved in the first half of the 19th century. Waikato-Tainui presented it to the people of Hamilton in 1973, and it is displayed in its own hall.
  5. Hamilton East · The east bank was laid out in 1864 as a military township, with an acre for each soldier-settler, and its grid of streets still follows that plan. It is now a quieter suburb of cafés and old wooden villas.
  6. Hamilton Lake · The lake's Māori name is Rotoroa, 'long lake'. A path of about 3.8 km runs all the way round it, through gardens, boardwalks and two playgrounds.

A world in one garden

Hamilton Gardens was built on an old rubbish tip by the river, and over decades it grew into a series of enclosed gardens, each telling the story of one garden tradition. In 2014 it was named International Garden of the Year. The Enclosed Gardens charge entry and close at dusk; allow two to three hours, and come on a weekday morning to have them almost to yourself.

  1. Te Parapara Māori Garden · Te Parapara is a traditional Māori food garden, where kūmara, the sweet potato brought by Polynesian voyagers, is grown in the old way. The carved gateway and storehouse were made by Māori carvers for the garden.
  2. Chinese Scholar's Garden · Chinese scholar gardens were built for retired officials to think, write and drink tea in. This one uses rocks, water and pavilions in that tradition, with views framed through windows and gateways like pictures.
  3. Italian Renaissance Garden · The garden follows the villa gardens of 15th- and 16th-century Italy, with clipped hedges, statues and strict symmetry. Renaissance designers wanted to show human order imposed on nature, the opposite of the Chinese garden next door.
  4. Char Bagh Indian Garden · A char bagh is a garden divided into four parts by water channels, a Persian and Mughal image of paradise. The same plan lies behind the gardens of the Taj Mahal.
  5. Tudor Garden · English Tudor gardens were made to show off wealth, and their owners set carved heraldic beasts on striped poles among the beds. The garden here has a full set of them, each holding a coat of arms.
  6. Surrealist Garden · One of the fantasy gardens, it plays with scale: oversized furniture, doors and figures make adults feel as small as children. It draws on the Surrealist painters' habit of putting ordinary things in impossible places.

Up the river to the Shire

Upstream of Hamilton the Waikato runs through rich farmland, horse studs and a chain of hydro lakes. This route follows it east past Cambridge to a fenced forest mountain, then to the farm where Hobbiton was built and on to the highest waterfall in the North Island. About 150 km in all. Book Hobbiton well ahead, and start the waterfall track with at least three hours of daylight left.

  1. Mystery Creek Events Centre · Every June this site hosts Fieldays, one of the largest agricultural shows in the Southern Hemisphere, with tractors, farm gadgets and more than 100,000 visitors. The rest of the year it is a quiet showground by the river.
  2. Cambridge · Cambridge calls itself the town of trees and champions: its streets are lined with old English trees, and it is a centre of thoroughbred horse breeding. New Zealand's national cycling team trains at the Avantidrome velodrome on the edge of town.
  3. Lake Karapiro · The lake was formed when the Karapiro dam was finished in 1947, the lowest of the chain of hydro dams on the Waikato. Its long, calm water made it the country's rowing venue, and it hosted the World Rowing Championships in 1978 and 2010.
  4. Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari · A pest-proof fence about 47 km long, finished in 2006, surrounds the whole forested mountain. Inside, with rats, stoats and possums removed, birds like the takahē and kākā have been brought back, and you can walk among them.
  5. Hobbiton Movie Set · Peter Jackson's scouts found the Alexander family's sheep farm from the air in 1998. The first set was temporary, but for 'The Hobbit' it was rebuilt in permanent materials, with 44 hobbit holes and the Green Dragon inn.
  6. Wairere Falls · At about 153 metres, Wairere is the highest waterfall in the North Island, dropping over the Kaimai Range escarpment. The track to the lookout is steep, about an hour up, and the top gives a view over the whole Waikato plain.
