Tulln: what to see, where to stay and how to get around

Now in Tulln--:--:--
·
--°

Tulln was Comagena, a Roman cavalry fort on the Danube, and it is the town where, in the Nibelungenlied, Kriemhild meets Attila to marry him. Much later it was the birthplace of Egon Schiele, son of the stationmaster. All of it fits into a small old town between the main square and the river. About two hours on flat streets, ending at the water.

Tulln

A short history of Tulln

The Romans built a cavalry fort here called Comagena, part of the frontier line on the Danube. The Nibelungenlied tells that in Tulln Attila (Etzel), king of the Huns, met his bride Kriemhild, and a fountain in the town commemorates the meeting. In 1890 the painter Egon Schiele, whose father was the stationmaster, was born in Tulln, and the town now has a museum named after him. Tulln is a quiet town between Vienna and the Wachau, and since 2008 it has had a permanent garden exhibition.

Romans, Nibelungs and Schiele

Tulln was Comagena, a Roman cavalry fort on the Danube, and it is the town where, in the Nibelungenlied, Kriemhild meets Attila to marry him. Much later it was the birthplace of Egon Schiele, son of the stationmaster. All of it fits into a small old town between the main square and the river. About two hours on flat streets, ending at the water.

  1. Hauptplatz · Tulln calls itself the Blumenstadt, the flower town, and has long been known for its garden fair, which is why the square is planted so heavily.
  2. Karner · Built in the 13th century to store bones from the overcrowded churchyard, it is counted among the most richly decorated charnel houses in Austria.
  3. Roman Salt Tower · The tower was part of the walls of Comagena and is one of the oldest Roman buildings in Austria still standing; it was later used to store salt.
  4. Egon Schiele Museum · The museum is in the former district jail, a fitting place: in 1912 Schiele himself spent 24 days in custody in Neulengbach over his drawings.
  5. Donaubühne · The stage floats on the Danube, and the audience sits on the bank, so the river itself becomes part of the set.
  6. Nibelungen fountain · The Nibelungenlied places the first meeting of Kriemhild and King Etzel, the poem's Attila, at Tulln, and the fountain shows that moment.

Downriver towards Vienna

From Tulln the cycle path runs its last stretch to Vienna through the Tullnerfeld plain and then between the wooded hills of the Wienerwald. Castles stand on both banks where the hills close in, and at the end waits one of the richest abbeys in Austria, at the city's edge. This is the final day of the Danube path, about 40 km to Vienna, or a short drive with the same stops.

  1. Donaulände · The riverside promenade runs along the old town; Tulln's position on the Danube is why the Romans and later the Babenbergs both held it.
  2. Aubad · The lake lies in the Danube floodplain woods, the Au, a landscape of willows and side channels that once flooded every spring.
  3. Greifenstein power station · The dam, completed in the 1980s, is the last on the Danube before Vienna, and the cycle path crosses it.
  4. Burg Greifenstein · The castle sits on a rock where the Wienerwald reaches the river, the point where the hills squeeze the Danube before the Vienna basin.
  5. Burg Kreuzenstein · Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek rebuilt the ruin between 1874 and 1906, filling it with medieval parts collected across Europe; it looks older than it is.
  6. Klosterneuburg Abbey · Its treasure is the Verdun Altar, finished in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun with 51 enamel plates; the abbey's founder, Margrave Leopold III, is Austria's patron saint.

Gardens, Schubert and the Wagram

Away from the river, the Tullnerfeld is a wide farming plain, and Tulln has made gardening its trade. South of it, a country house kept the memory of Schubert's summers with friends; north, a long loess ridge called the Wagram carries vineyards. A castle with a famous open-air stage closes the loop. About 90 km by car; a full day, best in summer when the gardens and concerts are on.

  1. Schiele birthplace · Egon Schiele was born in the station building in 1890, because his father Adolf was the stationmaster of Tulln.
  2. Die Garten Tulln · The garden show is run on ecological rules, with no chemical pesticides, artificial fertiliser or peat used anywhere in it.
  3. Schloss Atzenbrugg · Franz Schubert spent several summers here in the early 1820s with his circle of friends, and the castle now has a small Schubert museum.
  4. Stift Herzogenburg · The Augustinian canons' baroque buildings were begun by Jakob Prandtauer, the architect of Melk.
  5. Schloss Grafenegg · Its open-air stage, the Wolkenturm or cloud tower, is home to a summer music festival led by the pianist Rudolf Buchbinder.
  6. Kirchberg am Wagram · The Wagram is a ridge of wind-blown loess along the old Danube bank; the deep soft soil is ideal for Grüner Veltliner and the local Roter Veltliner.
