Ait Benhaddou: what to see, where to stay and how to get around

Ait Benhaddou is a fortified village of rammed earth stacked up a hill above the Ounila, on the old caravan road that carried salt and goods between the Sahara and Marrakech. Almost everyone now lives in the new village on the opposite bank, and only a few families still sleep inside the walls. The walk crosses the river, climbs through the alleys to the granary at the top and comes back down. About an hour and a half, with steps and loose earth; go at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset.

Ait Benhaddou

A short history of Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou is a ksar, a fortified village of mud and straw, built on a hill above the Ounila River on the caravan route that linked the Sahara with Marrakesh. Most of the houses seen today were rebuilt in the 17th century and later, because building of this kind is washed away by rain and has to be renewed constantly. In 1987 the village was declared a World Heritage Site. Since the 1960s many films have been shot here, among them 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962) and 'Gladiator' (2000). Most of the residents have moved to the new village across the river, and only a few families remain in the ksar itself.

Up through the ksar

Ait Benhaddou is a fortified village of rammed earth stacked up a hill above the Ounila, on the old caravan road that carried salt and goods between the Sahara and Marrakech. Almost everyone now lives in the new village on the opposite bank, and only a few families still sleep inside the walls. The walk crosses the river, climbs through the alleys to the granary at the top and comes back down. About an hour and a half, with steps and loose earth; go at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset.

  1. Ounila river · The ksar stands where the Ounila valley, which comes down from Telouet and the Tichka side of the Atlas, opens towards Ouarzazate. Controlling this crossing was the whole reason for building here.
  2. Ksar of Ait Benhaddou · UNESCO listed it in 1987 as an outstanding example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. The walls are rammed earth and mud brick, so they need replastering after rains; much of what you see has been repaired again and again.
  3. Ait Benhaddou · Directors have used the ksar since the 1960s: scenes of Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator were shot here, and it stood in for the slave city of Yunkai in Game of Thrones. Locals in the alleys will point out which wall was in which film.
  4. Kasbah of Tamdaght · Tamdaght was held by the Glaoui, the family that controlled the Tichka road in the early 20th century. Its towers are slowly melting back into the valley floor, and storks nest on top.
  5. Anmiter · The Ounila valley road was the caravan route before the French built the modern Tichka road in the 1930s. Driving it today, you follow the line the salt caravans walked.
  6. Kasbah of Telouet · This was the seat of the Glaoui; Thami El Glaoui, pasha of Marrakech under the French, ruled much of the south from here. After independence in 1956 the family fell from power, and the kasbah was left to decay — except for reception rooms whose carved ceilings survive.

Hollywood of the desert

Ouarzazate, half an hour south, turned the light, the empty land and the kasbahs into an industry: two big studios stand on the road in, and the town's people work as extras and builders between shoots. This drive links the studios to the real kasbahs they imitate. Allow half a day by car; studio tours run in the morning and afternoon, and a shoot can close them without notice.

  1. Atlas Studios · Atlas Studios opened in 1983 and is the older of the two big lots. Its sets include an Egyptian temple and Tibetan monastery pieces; the plaster is painted to look like stone and wood, and it is hollow when you knock.
  2. CLA Studios · Productions come to Ouarzazate because the desert, the oases and the mountains are all within an hour, and the light is reliable most of the year. Crews build here and then shoot on location in the valleys.
  3. Kasbah of Tifoultoute · Like Taourirt and Telouet, this kasbah belonged to the Glaoui, who planted strongholds along the routes they taxed. The view from the roof takes in the river and the palm strip below.
  4. Taourirt Kasbah · Taourirt was the Glaoui residence in Ouarzazate and housed a large household of relatives, servants and craftsmen. Only part of it is open, but the decorated upper rooms show what the family's wealth looked like.
  5. Cinema Museum · The museum sits in a former studio across from Taourirt and keeps props and pieces of sets from films shot in the region. It is small and a little dusty, which suits it.
  6. Ouarzazate weekly market · Ouarzazate grew as a French garrison town in the 1920s, and before the studios the market was its reason to exist for the villages around. It is still where people from the valleys come to buy and sell.

Water in a dry land

Everything green around here depends on water coming down from the Atlas: the Ounila, the Ouarzazate river, and the dam that holds them back for the Draa valley. This loop goes from the high pass down to the oasis and the lake, and ends at the solar towers that now make power from the same sun that dries the land. A full day by car; the Fint track is rough and best done with local advice.

  1. Tizi n'Tichka · At 2,260 metres this is the highest paved pass on the road between Marrakech and the south. Snow can close it in winter for a day or two, and the descent towards Ait Benhaddou takes longer than the map suggests.
  2. Ounila river · In summer the Ounila below the ksar is often a trickle you can step over, but after rain in the mountains it rises fast; that is why a footbridge now links the ksar to the new village.
  3. Fint Oasis · Fint is a small palm oasis hidden in a fold of dark hills a short way from Ouarzazate. The contrast between the green strip and the black stone is the reason people make the effort on the track.
  4. El Mansour Eddahbi Dam · The dam holds back the Draa's headwaters and releases them south to the palm groves of the Draa valley towards Zagora. In dry years the lake shrinks visibly, and the shoreline is far from the old waterline.
  5. Noor Ouarzazate · Noor is one of the largest concentrated solar power complexes in the world: fields of mirrors focus sunlight on a central tower. It was built in stages from the 2010s and feeds Morocco's grid.
  6. Ksar of Ait Benhaddou · The granary at the top of the hill, an agadir, was the village's bank: each family kept its grain there, safe from raids. Climb to it at sunset to see the whole valley in one turn.
